Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math: STEAM
Little Flower Academy was one of the very first schools in British Columbia to invest in a dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math program (STEAM) program. We boast one of the most sophisticated STEAM labs of any Vancouver high school and our students regularly welcome industry experts to the classroom to help facilitate learning and discovery.
Given the expanding opportunities for women in "non-traditional" academic fields, it was only natural to embrace the STEAM lab opportunity and adopt a progressive approach to integrated teaching across subjects. It also ushered in a whole new opportunity for teaching and learning that was at the forefront of BC-wide curriculum changes that were on the horizon.
This investment in STEAM has already proven invaluable for our students. Across BC, fewer than 8% of girls take Physics 12, meaning girls are 5x more likely to take Physics 12 at LFA. In the past few years, our LFA Physics Olympics team has consistently finished in the top 10 at UBC's Annual Physics Olympics competition—LFA is one of the only all-girl teams that competes. In the past five years, we've had four graduating students receive the prestigious Schulich Scholarship. Valued at $120,000, it's the most competitive and coveted undergraduate STEAM scholarship in Canada.
