This past November, thirty very excited Grade 10 Model UN students experienced their first MUN international conference taking part in the very interesting annual PACMUN conference at the Ala Moana Convention Centre in Honolulu.
The Model UN Club enjoys several interesting conferences as they compete locally and internationally each year. This conference is organized by the Stevens Foundation and has a diversity of interesting committee choices and very well informed and organized university level staff on each dais committee.
Special congratulations to Kaiya Ahuja (’27) who won the Best Delegate Award on the UNOHCR (the UN Refugee Agency, a commission on human rights) whose topic focused on the rights, legal protection and inclusion of people with disabilities. Kaiya’s achievement was outstanding given that this was Kaiya’s first conference and this was a large committee of about sixty students. Kaiya contributed significantly in all committee sessions from the very beginning and her opinions were always insightful and helpful and her oral skills revealed confidence, clear articulation and dynamism. Well done, Kaiya! In addition, three students-Hilary Tai (’27), Sarah Nguyen (’27) and Andrea Hererra-Trujillo (’27) were awarded Verbal Commendations for their excellent contributions on their respective committees and this too was commendable as there were many experienced delegates at PACMUN this year. It is significant to note that all students exuded great effort and enthusiasm at their first conference learning and developing well for future MUN conferences.
MUN develops students’ ability to think critically, to write with accuracy and precision and to liaise with others to present resolutions for important world issues. Every single conference is a rewarding and stimulating learning experience for students who make giant leaps and new friends after each conference they attend. In addition to learning at the conference, this group of thirty students enjoyed interacting with many Hawaiians as they took advantage of many cultural activities like visiting the Polynesian Cultural Centre, swimming in the beautiful aqua waters of Waikiki and exploring the beautiful Ko’olau Range and Mount Pali on the east coast of Oahu. MUN allows students to form global connections and acquire knowledge of other cultures and their peoples providing real and significant education that cannot be replicated in the classroom. Congratulations Model UN Angels! Take what you see and learn in all you do!
