LFAMUN and New Leaders for 2016-17

JULIE MILLS
One nice sunny April day in 2016, 87 students from LFA and VC came together for the first ever one day LFA Model UN conference. This day came about because the LFA Model UN Club leaders thought that the younger members of the LFA MUN Club would benefit from another conference before competing at other conferences in the next academic year. 56 LFA students signed up almost as soon as the conference was announced. Leaders then thought of inviting VC to add interest and competition.
The day was wonderful! A high level of debate was characteristic of every committee. The committees, topics and background guides were created by a team of leaders and each was very interesting. There were 5 committees- one on Space Development, Drugs and Crime, Mental Health Issues, Syria and the War of the Roses (Historical Committee). The Awards were pretty evenly split between LFA and VC but all students learnt a lot through this experience while having fun. The list of winners can be seen at the end of this article. In addition, the conference was a chance to have fun and mingle with VC and fellow LFA students who proved to be very funny at times, especially at the end of the last session when the' superlatives "or fun awards were given out. There was a spectacular dance off on the Space Development Committee!

We were very fortunate to have a wonderful leadership team with Sandy Pang as the Secretary General and Elizabeth Vaz as the Director of Delegate Affairs. Ably assisting them were the 5 Directors of the committees- Nhe Li, Jacqueline Ovsenek, Teresa Chen, as well as Paige Furlan (marketing) and Eurielle Marmol (in charge of all technology and the website). All of the other leaders assisted in chairing the committees and all of the preparation for the conference was also done very competently by this team. We were privileged to have Mrs. Wingson as the keynote speaker for the conference who spoke on the importance of good leadership today. Her moving words named many leaders both past and present who have worked for justice and she spoke of the characteristics of good leaders including the not so often mentioned quality of mercy.

I would also like to thank the ten grade 9 students who volunteered to act as pages for the day. They were Nicola Bonard, Natalie Ng, Hannah Ro, Jenica Sy, Morgan Nunez, Shelisse Durity- Wingson, Erica Ko, Gabriella Guerra, Tiffany Shiao and  Risa Ogushi. They were very efficient and they looked and acted very professionally. Thanks for your help "New Model UNers".  Last but not least, thank you to all LFA competitors. You just shined!

A special word of congratulations goes to the following LFA Model UN students who will be new leaders for the 2016-7 school year. They are Eleanor Lee, Enya Ho, Phoebe Cheung, Lauren Ebert, Nicole and Naomi Shi, Valerie Mok, Maddie Buss, Lorraine Fabre, Grace Walker, Elise Lafleur, Jaclyn Miller, Gabi Wohlgemuth, Emma Christie Gallop and Nicole Poon. They are prepped and ready to lead the Grade 9 simulation on Tuesday May 10th. Congratulations girls! To be chosen as a leader you have revealed considerable skill at Model UN conferences and you have revealed a desire to help others. Thank you.
