With the demands and expectations on our technology infrastructure ever increasing, we're moving into a new five year technology plan that will see technology available across campus, in all our classrooms for all of our students. Thanks to an exceptional 2013-2014 Annual Fund, we'll start that process early. This summer we'll introduce new, upgraded wifi across the school.
We introduced our current wifi capability to LFA nearly eight years ago. At that time, the demands on wireless internet were pedestrian by today's standards. We maintained only static, PC-based computer labs and there were few laptops and "Computers on Wheels" that circulated the school for presentation purposes. There were no mobile devices to speak of.
Fast-forward to 2014 and school use of technology has changed significantly, reflecting the society we live in. Computer labs remain in constant demand, but we've introduced two new labs that are entirely dependent on wifi: our mobile Chrome books are shuffled around the school, while our science notebooks are mobile within the laboratories. Mobile devices--be they computers, tablets or even phone--are now regularly used for presentations, homework and group work. We're planning for a future of increased computer and lab mobility and a higher demand on web-based document and program use. Our current wifi capability is simply not up to the task.
Working to a plan, we see increased dependency on wifi as the foundation for a technology roll-out across the school. This summer, we'll take the first step of capital investment with a huge wifi upgrade that will allow us to run more than five times the number of devices, all with more bandwidth.
With the onset of school in September, our mobile Chrome Book lab will be fully functional across the school campus, with proper connectivity regardless of which classroom its being used in. With the increased use of the school website for both online assessments and homework, as well as the Google document sharing that is now part an parcel of the modern classroom setting, we're see ourselves on a great footing going forward!
This major step is possible this summer because of the generous support we've received by our Annual Fund supporters. Thank you.
