As Little Flower Academy nears 100 years on our campus, we are excited about a nearing modernization project, which will replace the buildings originally constructed in the 1950s. As it has been our utmost pleasure and privilege sharing this beautiful neighbourhood with you, we are reaching out to you, our neighbours, to give you an overview of the project and answer some questions that are most often asked.
The first phase of development will introduce a new academic building on the north side of our campus. This three-story building will be constructed along West King Edward to house new classrooms, science and engineering labs, and design spaces. A new auditorium and performance centre will connect this new academic wing with the existing north wing of our school. Once this construction is complete, the existing south wing of our campus will be deconstructed to make room for additional parking and a small, all-weather athletic field.
In simplest terms, this is a reorientation of our campus: one can imagine LFA shifting the current academic and auditorium building to West King Edward, and away from Nanton Ave. The project will replace our outdated campus infrastructure with modern classrooms and specialized learning spaces. The project is not an expansion; rather, a critically needed upgrade, modernization, and specialization of the campus.
No. There is no increase in student enrollment planned with the new project. We believe our small school size allows us to nurture a strong school culture and provide an enriched, personalized educational experience for all our students. Upon completion of the building project, LFA will maintain its current student enrollment.
Little Flower remains committed to working with our neighbouring schools to keep the streets around our schools safe for everyone. The three-school traffic management plan will remain in effect throughout construction and will be maintained after the completion of the new building. This plan provides LFA with two drop-off zones adjacent to the school property: one on the south side of W. King Edward and one on the north side of Nanton Ave. With a new student entrance on W. King Edward, students will have easier access to public transit and arterial streets.
The new parking lot will be located along the south side of the campus, along Nanton Ave. The redesigned parking lot will provide additional on-campus parking spaces and more efficient use of space. As the parking lot will have a single driveway, the size of our Nanton Avenue drop-off zone will be increased, which should reduce congestion at the intersection of Nanton and Alexandra during peak times.
The new academic wing will be situated on W. King Edward, tucked in behind the beautiful row of mature trees that currently border the north side of our property. The preservation of those trees is a priority.
The addition of a school entrance on W. King Edward will allow students travelling by transit or using the W. King Edward drop-off zone to enter the school directly from W. King Edward. We anticipate this new entrance will reduce foot and vehicle traffic on residential streets around the school.
A replacement athletic field will be built on the south end of the campus, along Nanton Ave. Similar to our current field, the all-weather pitch will be too small for athletic competition. It's sole use will be daytime Physical and Health Education classes and LFA athletic team practices. There is no plan to install lighting for after-hours use.
