Angels Grab Critical Win to Lead League

Up against cross town rivals Crofton House, our varsity Angels field hockey team delivered a brilliant performance on Wednesday afternoon. On the back of two goals from Amy, LFA hung on for the critical 2-1 win to take top spot in the Vancouver independent league.
Both of Amy's goals came off of rebounds on short corner attempts and while the first was from a determined effort, the second was a thing of beauty as Amy swatted it hard out of mid-air, after the Crofton keeper parried the initial high, hard flick from Sienna.

Kaelen was a rock in net, as always--making several great saves through the course of the game. That said, the overall play was mostly even. LFA probably generated a little more sustained attack through possession, with Bea and AnnYee playing important minutes in the centre of the pitch. Indeed, it was our central players (which also included Amy and Claire) who reliably used our wide sides throughout the game. Emma and Abby were particularly effective on the wing halves, regularly finding our forwards, who were fully committed to their routes. The result was some gorgeous overlapping hockey, with centre forward Sienna driving much of our attack.

When the counter attack inevitably came from Crofton, there were moments of desperate defending. Jess and Charlotte did well to neutralize much of that attack. They also had to contend with a suffocating press from Crofton, which is to the credit of the Falcons' commitment to running down our swing plays. Their goal came off of that press. In many ways, the teams play similarly--our press also caused Crofton fits at times as they had to turn to the big hit to try and play through our coverage.

In the end, it might be described as a chess match played at incredible speed. Simply wonderful high school field hockey played by two very good teams. The Angels will be very happy for the win as the league placement will make progression at Zones and eventual Provincial Championship qualification a little easier. The team leaves for the prestigious Bridgman Tournament in Victoria tonight. Go Angels!
