Angels Draw with Falcons

Our league kicked off last night with an opening game against the Crofton Falcons. In front of a really good crowd at UBC Wright Field, our Angels fought their way back for a draw and missed out on the win by the tiniest of margins.
The game was very much one of two halves. The first, Crofton held the run of play and forced LFA into mistakes with an organized press. They managed to take a 1-0 lead into the half, despite some really fantastic work from keeper Kaelen Uy '25, who is a rock for LFA. Apart from the occasional counter attack and, at times, good possession, our Angels struggled to generate much attack.

After losing, Amy Stelling '26 (one of our most experienced players) to an injury that needed attention, it was feeling like the game might come a bit unraveled. Instead, the team rallied and when Amy returned to the field, we surged forward. There was some great work in the middle of the pitch from Claire Cheng '26 and rookies Michaela Larson '28 and Eva Fitch '29. Bea Williscroft '26 took over the back line. Pressure led to a short corner, but it was a laser pass on a long corner from Eva to Michaela on the edge of the D that caught us our break. Michaela danced by the defender and let go a lovely low shot to the corner that wrong-footed the Falcon keeper to draw the game even and is the early leader for the golden stick, despite only being in Grade 9.

LFA pushed for the winner. With moments left, another long corner play had us isolate the top of the D and get in for the shot, which was agonizingly close to the final whistle which sounded just before the shot crossed the line. The game was a microcosm of the adage: a roller coaster of emotion. Frustration at being down... to the security in drawing even... to the excitement of thinking we'd won... only to disappointment of going back to a draw. Notwithstanding, it was a fair result for an exciting game between two well organized sides so early in the season.
