11 Awards for LFA Model UN at Horizons and VMUN Conferences

LFA students have shown great spirit, participation, and success at two recent conferences in Vancouver, coming away with 11 awards!
11 MODEL UN AWARDS FOR LFA STUDENTS AT RECENT HORIZONS AND VMUN CONFERENCES!
 
            LFA students attended Horizons (run by CAHSMUN) at the Sheraton Wall Centre in early December, 2023 and 36 students participated at VMUN which is run by St. George's and was held at the Hyatt Hotel in January, 2024.
            Special congratulations go to the following 11 award winners-
At Horizons- Amy Shumka '25 - the Outstanding Delegate on the African Union as Sudan
                       Sienna Loo '25 - the Outstanding Delegate on the special Cabinet Committee
                       Sophia Tatone '25 - the Outstanding Delegate on HCC (Historical Crisis)
                       Celina Chow '25 - the Honorable Mention on BRI (Belt and Road Initiative)
                       Ruthann Chiu '24 - the Best Position Paper Award on BRI
At VMUN- Amy Shumka '25 - Best Delegate Award on Security Council
                   Kristina Bedford '25 - Outstanding Delegate on UNICEF
                   Allison Chak '26 - Honorable Mention on WHO
                   Lidya Erel '26 - Honorable Mention on UNODC (Drugs and Crime)
                   Addison Sapiecha '26 - Best Researched on WHO
                    Sophie Cunningham '24 - Best Researched on ASEAN
             As all Model UN students can attest, participating in the LFA Model UN Club develops many academic and personal skills. Academically, students learn about “real world” issues and each conference is a huge learning experience. In addition, students develop good critical thinking skills when they use and evaluate other countries’ ideas for resolution papers and delegates learn to think on their feet. MUN students become strong researchers and writers after completing position papers on their country’s stance on any given issue and students gain confidence in speaking – sometimes monumentally even after a few conferences. Model UN also strengthens personal skills. Socially, MUN is a great way to meet interact with new people. In Vancouver, students meet fellow delegates form many schools in BC and sometimes from international countries. Internationally, it is so enriching to meet people from different cultures at MUN conferences. We have attended conferences in Europe and Asia where we have met students from France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain, England, Romania, Austria and Saudi Arabia to name a few and in Asia, people from Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and India as well as people from countries further afield like Australia and the USA. In addition, conferences in North America like PACMUN, Hawaii and Princeton in New York enhance cultural understanding. It is incredibly interesting and educational to have the opportunity to liaise on committees and form resolutions with delegates of different nationalities and friendships are often forged.
             Thank you to all the LFA MUN Club leaders for your organizational skills that help all club members to prepare for conferences. You are invaluable! I look forward to MILANMUN at Spring Break where many leaders and others are participating. Performance at Horizons and VMUN have indicated we are ready for this international conference! Congratulations to all “LFA Munners”!
